Your Voice in Your Child's Education

I'm Idunnu Tokurah, a Winnipeg parent and business owner running for School Trustee in RETSD Ward 2. I believe parents belong in the room where decisions about our kids get made.

Why I'm running

A parent's seat at the table

I'm running because I'm a parent first — and like a lot of parents in Ward 2, I believe that parents and schools are partners in education. When we work together, every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed. I am running to ensure that every child is given the support and opportunities they deserve. As a former researcher at the University of Manitoba, I have seen firsthand how a strong educational foundation cultivates critical thinking, resilience, and innovation. And as a business owner who built and runs my own business here in Winnipeg, I've had to make budgets transparent, explain decisions clearly, and answer to the people I serve. That's the standard I want to bring to River East Transcona school board.

Parents shouldn't have to chase information about their kids' education. It should come to them.
My Priorities

What I'll work on for the Division

Five priorities, grounded in what parents in our division are already telling us matters.

1

Parents as partners in education for Kids

Kids do best when curriculum, classroom supports, and resources are decided with parent input, not around it. I'll work to keep parents informed and genuinely involved in decisions that shape their children's classrooms.

2

Communication Parents Can Count On

I'll push for proactive updates, not ones parents have to go digging for. Consistent communication with families matters, especially when things get disrupted — schedule changes, attendance concerns, or school-day interruptions.

3

Financial Transparency

Manitoba school divisions are being asked to do more on modest funding increases — which makes it more important, not less, that parents can see where every dollar in our division's budget goes. I'll push for clear, public budget reporting and open Q&A before spending decisions are finalized, not after.

4

Teacher Support

Great outcomes start with supported teachers. I'll advocate for the resources, manageable workloads, and respect teachers need to do their best work for our kids every day.

5

Growth Without Overcrowding

River East Transcona is Manitoba's second-largest school division, and enrollment has grown roughly 11% since 2019. That kind of growth strains classrooms and space fast if investment doesn't keep pace. I'll advocate for planning and facilities that grow with our kids, not behind them.
